Thinking about defects with your brand new home

If you have bought a brand new home, and have recently moved into your home, it is likely your home will be covered by a housebuilder’s warranty. This warranty is normally valid up to two years from the date of completion and it provides cover for any defects you notice once you move.  These can be both minor defects such as patch paintwork to major defects like issues with your plumbing.

Given the time limit, we strongly recommend you closely inspect your home when you first move in and make a list of defects you spot.  You should then send this list to the housebuilder, who will be happy to inspect your snags and ensure they are remedied.

Not all snags are instantly visible so we suggest inspecting your home for defects on two or three further occasions before the builder’s warranty expires to ensure you have picked up all snags.

Thinking about bigger issues with your Home Reach home

If you bought your home through Home Reach Shared Ownership, your home will have included a 10-year builder warranty. This warranty offers you cover against any structural issues that may arise. Contact details for your warranty provider will have been given to you when you first moved into your home (normally by the housebuilder), and you should contact your warranty provider if you have a serious defect.

Thinking about issues with a preowned home you purchased through Heylo

If you purchased a preowned home from Heylo, including via our Your Home scheme, it’s your responsibility to maintain and repair the home as soon as you move in.

If you are concerned about managing the additional cost that may be incurred from an  emergency like a boiler breakdown, or plumbing issue then you may wish to consider taking out Home Emergency Cover.  To find out more about Home Emergency Cover, including prices and cover inclusions / exclusions, we recommend using price comparison websites.
