How to Claim on Your Buildings Insurance This Winter

17.12.25 11:10 AM

Storms, heavy rain, and freezing temperatures can sometimes lead to property damage. Here’s what you need to know about making a claim under your buildings insurance policy.

Who Arranges Your Buildings Insurance?
Houses: Under the terms of your shared ownership lease, Heylo arranges the buildings insurance for your home. You pay for this monthly as part of your costs.
Flats: Insurance is arranged by your managing agent and included in your service charge. If you live in a flat, contact your management company directly for details of the policy and how to make a claim.

Why This Matters
Knowing what to do if damage occurs can save time and stress. Keep these details handy and act quickly if your home is affected by severe weather this winter. Please note: Buildings insurance does not cover your contents. We recommend arranging separate contents insurance for your belongings.

Understanding Excess Amounts

An excess is the amount you agree to pay towards the cost of a claim before your insurer covers the rest. You are responsible for paying the claim excess in full. Heylo does not contribute towards these costs:

  • Standard excess: £500
  • Escape of water: £750
  • Subsidence: £1,000
  • Material damage caused by tenants: £500
  • Fire, lightning, aircraft, explosion, earthquake: £500
