Fire safety is an important issue, especially when it comes to our own home, and ensuring we have the right preventative measures and checks in place will help if an emergency does occur.

We have put together some top tips to help you keep safe.

·  Make sure to check all Smoke and Carbon Monoxide alarms regularly in your home. It is recommended that these alarms are checked once a month to make sure they are working as they should be and can be one of the simplest steps to prevent tragedies due to fire or Carbon Monoxide poisoning.

·  Check your electrical appliances. Check your socket limits and try not to overload them with too many appliances in one go as this can lead to overheating and potentially a fire. It is also best to check for faulty/damaged wiring on appliances.

·  Keep electric bikes and scooters outside or (if not possible to keep outside) remove them away from doors/escape routes. There has been many incidents over the past few years of fires caused by e-scooters and e-bikes.

·  Choose an escape route. Whether you are by yourself, are in a couple or have a family, make sure you all know where your escape routes are and ensure that any fire escape routes are free and clear of any clutter or furniture.

·  If you are in an apartment, make sure you know what the fire procedures are for the block you are living in. This includes, evacuation procedures, confirming where all the communal fire equipment is, and ensuring that the communal fire alarms and equipment is being checked regularly by the company in charge of this.

·  Invest in your own fire safety equipment, including fire extinguishers, fire blankets and learn how to use them.

·  Arrange a fire safety check. This is a free assessment from the fire service which is an invaluable resource which can end up saving lives.
