Keeping Safe: Barbeques, fire pits, bonfires and fireworks

Autumn is here and if you are looking to get outside and enjoy your garden over the next couple of months, whether it is a Halloween or Fireworks party, here is some advice from the London Fire Brigade and our Property Management team on how to ensure it’s safe:

Fire Pits and Barbeques:

  • Never use indoors (even disposable BBQs): They can stay hot for hours and give off Carbon Monoxide gas.
  • Do not use on your balcony (again, even disposable BBQs): Wind can carry smouldering ash towards plants, trees or neighbouring properties and this can start fires.
  •  Be careful where you position the BBQ or fire pit in your garden: for BBQs, ground level is best, away from anything flammable like fences, sheds, trees or bins.
  • If you have a fire pit make sure it is steady to minimise the risk of it falling over.
  • Supervise all children and pets and never leave them alone with a BBQ or fire pit device.

Disposable BBQ’s can stay hot for hours (as well as the ground underneath and surrounding), so do not place in your bin until fully safe.

Bonfires and Fireworks

  • We do not recommend having bonfires in your garden. In the last five years the London Fire Brigade has attended over 300 out-of-control bonfires and they can pose a real risk. Wherever possible we recommend you attend an organised bonfire event rather than build your own.
  • Like bonfires, fireworks can pose a fire risk and wherever possible we recommend attending an organised event.

If you are looking to host a fireworks party in your garden, please read this leaflet to understand how to buy, handle and use them safely:

Finally, when lighting fires or fireworks please be sensitive to your pets and neighbours.
